If it wasn't for one man and his work, our licks would still be rudely interrupted by buzzing, humming and general audio detritus. Rik Flynn discovers why Seth Lover, the inventor of the humbucker, deserves his place on the guitar podium of fame

Five Great PAF Alternatives

For those without the money to purchase a set of original PAFs, there are lots of excellent alternatives available. Here’s our pick of some of the best…

Tom Holmes: 450/455

As well as making guitars for ZZ Top and Bo Diddley, Tom Holmes is known for making one of the best PAF replicas around, both in sound and appearance.
The pickups are handwound and available in very limited quantities. Many rate these higher than the real deal!

Seymour Duncan: SH-55 Seth Lover Model

Seymour Duncan worked with the late great man himself to bring you this model using Lover’s actual notes – as good a match for the originals as any

£118.95-£131.95

Bare Knuckle Pickups: The Mule

Bare Knuckle makes handwound pickups of the highest order. The Mule model is built to the same specs as Lover’s original PAF, but the coils are scatterwound by hand. Excellent pickups.

Lindy Fralin: Pure PAF

Lindy Fralin’s original-style humbucker comes highly recommended by the experts – high output, great character and a smooth tone. A surefire winner

Gibson: Classic ’57/’57 Classic Plus

Gibson’s Tom Holmes-designed Classic ’57 comes with a ‘Patent Applied For’ decal sticker on the baseplate and is an exact replica of the originals. It’s also available with gold-plated covers, nickel covers or exposed coils for that extra-rocky look
