Line 6 calls its weeny flashdrive recording device 'inspiration insurance'. We couldn't put it better.

There's nothing more frustrating than coming up with a great riff and having no way of recording it. Even if you have a home studio, it can be such a hassle getting everything set up that by the time you do, the moment has often gone. Line 6's BackTrack+Mic is designed specifically to eliminate this problem. It has 2Gb of flash memory onto which your noodling is recorded in WAV form. There's an jack input and output, a built-in microphone, a headphones socket, and a very important little button called Mark.

IN USE
Turn on the BackTrack, plug in your guitar, and play away. Everything you do is listened to by the device, and when you've played something you like, you simply press the Mark button, and it will nominate it as special. When you're done, use the Forward and Reverse buttons to recall marked and non-marked ideas. There are no onboard effects, but you can use the mic input to record your amp or even a band rehearsal. Recordings can be transferred via USB 2.0 to your PC or Mac, and settings can also be sent back from there to the BackTrack. Plugging in the USB will recharge the battery to a maximum of eight hours: the maximum recording time is 24 hours.

Verdict

A bit of genius: simple, affordable, essential. What are you waiting for? Buy one today.
