BBC 6Music listeners have voted ex-Red Hot Chilli Peppers guitarist, John Frusciante best guitarist in the past 30 years.

The ex-guitarist for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers has been voted best guitarist in the past 30 years by BBC 6Music listeners in their 'Axe Factor' poll.

30, 424 listeners in total voted on the 6Music poll and Frusciante came out top of a list of 40 possibilities, beating G'N'R legend, Slash, Muse six-string virtuoso, Matt Bellamy and Smiths / Cribs lead-man, Johnny Marr to snatch the top spot.

Frusciante played on classic RHCP albums including the worldwide smash, Blood Sex Sugar Magik and 1999's hit album Californication. Frusciante, left the band in December 2009, to pursue his solo work.

6Music Dj Shaun Keaveny said of Frusciante: "His range, from minimalist melody lines, through choppy Hendrixian chord voicings all the way up to eleven with wailing metal tinged blues, gives him the edge over many in the list. For that I salute him."

The full top ten was as follows:

1. John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
2. Slash (Guns ‘n' Roses)
3. Matt Bellamy (Muse)
4. Johnny Marr (The Smiths)
5. Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine)
6. Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
7. Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead)
8. Prince
9. Jack White (White Stripes)
10. Peter Buck (REM)
