Wiring Secrets Pt.2

A Brighter Tele

Tele players often complain that their neck pickups sound dull or muffled. Original Teles had a preset roll-off in the neck position, so this was hardly an issue (for many years Leo Fender fondly imagined that jazz players would eventually take to his guitars).

Before going to the trouble or expense of buying a brighter pickup or (oh, the horror) routing your body or pickguard, consider this: the metal covers on traditional Tele neck pickups have much the same effect as PAF covers.

To release the full frequency potential of Tele neck pickups, simply snip the cover’s grounding connection. You’ll experience a bit of noise if you touch the cover, but that’s easy to avoid… and the extra brightness and transparency might transform your guitar.
